| Albania is Europe's 'poor mens house.' One can compare the situation in this small Balkan-state with some African countries. Last year after the collapse of the so-called piramide-games, it was chaos in Albania. Still there is a big tension, in which people try to find their way. In this difficult climate, foundations like Soros try to improve the situation. Soros has a very ambitious education-program. Some individuals, as the Dutch optician Paul Luyf are helping in different ways. Luyf is travelling twice to three times a year to Albania, measuring the eyes of the poor part of the population (for example Roma-people, ex-political prisoners) and providing them glasses for free.'A sight for a future' In December last year Luyf was cooperating with Soros and measured the eyes of pupils (and sometimes their parents) in the schools. Soros and Luyf will cooperate in the future more closely and try in this wonderful joint-venture to help the population in Albania. |
